HistoryQueensCare Family Clinics has a rich history. The original clinic was founded in 1897 by the Society of El Hogar Feliz (Happy Home) to care for the abandoned and neglected children of Los Angeles. In the 1930’s, the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart made space for the small clinic in their new hospital, Queen of Angels. Some fifty years later, the clinic was moved to its present location adjacent to St. Anne’s Maternity Home in the Echo Park area of Los Angeles. In 1994 the Franciscan Sisters, for financial reasons, transferred management control of the Franciscan Clinic to Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center. When the medical center was sold in 1998 and the corporate name was changed to QueensCare, it combined its other community clinics in the Wilshire District and Hollywood with the Franciscan Clinics. In 1999 the Franciscan Clinics, doing business as QueensCare Family Clinics, opened new facilities in Eagle Rock and East Los Angeles. The five clinics serve the needs of the growing numbers of medically uninsured. In 2001 a new self-perpetuating board, independent of QueensCare, was established. QueensCare Family Clinics is now a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). QueensCare is a partner in and major supporter of the operation of the Clinics under the auspices of the independent board.
